Animal Development

SYNOPSIS

The module provides an understanding of the principles of animal development, introducing critical

genes and their products that play roles in regulating metazoan development. Classical embryology will

be integrated with contemporary molecular investigations into developmental mechanisms.

Gene Manipulation

Synopsis

Detailed techniques whereby recombinant DNA is characterised, manipulated and expressed. The principles underlying this methodology are emphasised and skills are developed in analysing examples of data from bacterial and eukaryotic systems.

Mutations and Human Health

Synopsisʉ۬

The module provides an advanced understanding of the effects of carcinogenic agents on human health, and develops skills in investigating and assessing DNA damage caused by genotoxic compounds to improve the prevention and treatment of cancer and human disease.

Aspects of Human Sensory and Metabolic Biochemistry

Synopsis

examples of inborn errors of metabolism,
the, physiological consequences of those errors and their management. The biochemistry and physiology of visual transduction, olfaction and sensory biochemistry is covered. Aspects of central nervous system biochemistry such as the provision of energy for the brain, the metabolism of neurotransmitters and the role of neurotransmitters in controlling behaviour is also considered.
